Measuring Interaction Experiences: Integration of Multiple Psychophysiological Methods

The research of user experience employs a holistic approach to investigate people’s responses when interacting with information and communication technologies (ICT). This has brought new and fresh ways to improve and optimize the design and use of interactive systems. One of the methods incorporates people’s physiological responses during their interaction with computers and media. Building on basic research in psychology and physiology, these psychophysiological measures give insight into people’s emotional and cognitive processes. Thus, they allow capturing core aspects of people’s experiences when using interactive artifacts. In this context an important aim is to create intelligent systems that adapt to the changing needs, emotions, and behavior of their users during their interaction. This paper takes the position that the use of single psychophysiological measures is insufficient to achieve the aforementioned aim. Interaction and ultimately experience is governed by multiple complex variables. Therefore the integrated use of multiple measures offers better ways and more opportunities to enable more complex and thus useful adaptation.
